SIG Membership Application

The Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) is a national organization of more than 33,000 registered nurses and other healthcare professionals dedicated to excellence in patient care, teaching, research and education in the field of oncology. A prime goal of ONS is to provide a network of peer support and exchange for oncology nurses. To do so, ONS introduced a formal structure of Special Interest Groups (SIG) to facilitate networking of ONS members in an identified subspecialty area. The Cancer Genetics SIG was established in 1997.

Cancer Genetics SIG Mission Statement

The mission of the Cancer Genetics SIG is to provide a forum for the networking, education, and professional growth of nurses in cancer genetics in order to improve genetic services.

Goals
  • Achieve quality cancer genetics care.
  • Ensure RN role in cancer genetics care.
  • Promote evidence based nursing practice in cancer genetics.
  • Enhance the Cancer Genetics SIG and ONS viability.

Activities

The Cancer Genetics SIG supports the work of ONS in educating nurses about cancer genetics by submitting topics for presentation at the ONS Annual Congress and Fall Institute. They are also planning to develop an expanded directory of Cancer Genetics SIG members to facilitate networking among nurses in cancer genetics; to develop a packet that identifies resources and educational opportunities for nurses entering the cancer genetics field; and to explore ways to keep members informed of new developments in cancer genetics. The SIG has member liaison relationships with the International Society of Nurses in Genetics and the Cancer SIG of the National Society of Genetic Counselors in order to promote information sharing among professionals in the cancer genetics field. The Cancer Genetics SIG has also worked with ONS OnlineSM to develop a cancer genetics area located in the clinical practice section.

Benefits/Communication

The SIG meets once per year during the ONS Annual Congress. Cancer Genetics SIG leaders communicate with SIG members through written communiques. They also publish a newsletter that will provide information related to cancer genetics and reports on SIG projects and activities.

Membership Requirements

All SIG members must be members in good standing of the national Oncology Nursing Society. ONS members receive one free SIG membership. Additional SIG memberships are $15 each.
